Beaune Clos de l’Écu 2019 is a Premier Cru Monopole from Domaine Faiveley, produced from vines situated on a steep, south-facing slope with gravelly soils. This historic vineyard was purchased by the Faiveley family in 2003 and is known for producing Pinot Noir with a robust structure and elegant fruit. The grapes are hand-sorted and partially de-stemmed before a 19-day vatting period with daily punch-downs to extract colour and tannins. The 2019 vintage, though low in volume due to extreme weather, produced grapes of outstanding health and aromatic intensity. Aged for 15 months in French oak, the wine displays notes of raspberries, peonies and a refreshing hint of menthol. It is a lively and spicy expression of Beaune that evolves beautifully in the bottle, offering a more powerful alternative to the softer styles of the Côte de Beaune.

Aromas of plums, rich forest floor, warm spices and smoked meats introduce the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l`Écu Monopole, a medium-bodied, bright and elegant wine that`s satiny and melting, with lively acids and fine, powdery tannins. This is as fine a rendition of the Clos de l`Écu as I can remember tasting. - William Kelley

The 2019 Beaune Clos de l’Ecu 1er Cru, raised in 30% new oak for 24 months, was quite backward on the nose, showing tightly wound, slightly tertiary red berry fruit. The palate has good structure, quite savory in style, and a lightly spiced finish. This is a fine Beaune to enjoy over the next 8–10 years. Neal Martin1st December 2020
