Lucien Le Moine is a micro-négoce founded in 1999 by Mounir and Rotem Saouma producing remarkably small quantities of exceptional quality wine solely from Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. The 2016 Bâtard-Montrachet is flamboyant and rich on the nose yet exudes superb delineation and complex aromatic nuances. Rich, full-bodied and powerful on the palate, there is excellent focus and drive, culminating in an exceptionally long, mineral-infused finish. A superb release that has youthful appeal but will flourish with further cellaring.
Vinous
Extremely reduced on the nose, which Saouma takes as a positive sign for this cuvée. Wild, rocky and powerful, with very sweet (actually three grams per liter) flavors of pear oil and clove complemented by smoky minerality and framed by surprising lemony acidity (Saouma told me that this wine was stinky a few months ago, smelling like firecrackers). This Bâtard has the palate presence and tannic support of a red wine, finishing with extraordinary thickness and length. Today it's hard to scrape this off the palate. These vines are planted on humid, clay-rich soil. (14% alcohol)Stephen Tanzer1st September 2018

A Boutique Négociant

Founded by Mounir and Rotem Saouma in the late 1990s, Lucien Le Moine is a small, quality focussed négociant that bottle wines from some of the greatest Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The team aim to bottle around 100 barrels each vintage, which can sometimes represent over 60 different wines. There are no contracts with the growers and no winemaking requirements from Lucien Le Moine beyond the stipulation that the wines be of the highest possible quality.

The wines arrive with Lucien Le Moine fully vinified and Rotem and Mounir focus solely on élévage, racking the wines into new oak barrels made to their own particular specifications. It's tricky to generalise across dozens of wines from many different crus, but both the whites and reds tend towards the generous with a ripeness of fruit and a fullness of body that is rare in the Côte d'Or.
