Fontaine-Gagnard may not be the largest producer in the Cote de Beaune, but what they lack in size they more than make up for in quality. Owning Grand Cru vineyards in three separate sites in Chassagne, the team make small quantities of beautifully composed White Burgundy. This excellent Batard is fresh and poised with enough weight to balance the acidity. The finish is creamy with notes of mineral stone fruit. Drink 2025 - 2035.

Wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of vine blossom, acacia honey, mandarin oil, ripe pears and hazelnuts, the 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is full-bodied, unctuous and dense, with a blockier, more foursquare profile than the lavishly expansive Criots, with more depth and concentration too, concluding with a long, mouthwatering finish. This is quintessential Bâtard.William Kelley4th January 2019

The 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has more presence on the nose than Vincent Girardin's contribution from this vineyard but displays a licorice/menthol scent that I find distracting. This may be the first time I have ever described the nose on a Bâtard-Montrachet as medicinal (though it subsides with time). The palate is tangy on the entry with strong sour lemon and lemon sherbet notes, stem ginger and touches of rhubarb, and a bit more extract than its peers, though it needs more finesse. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune. Neal Martin1st August 2021
