Established in the 1980s, Domaine Blain-Gagnard is a family-owned estate with a diverse portfolio of appellations. The Chardonnay grapes for the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru are sourced from three different parcels planted between 1939 and 1986. This particular release is from 2011, a vintage for those who prefer elegance and purity over power and concentration. Expect notes of pineapple, guava and stony minerality, with a lovely spike of lemon.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Bâtard-Montrachet 2011 did not show as expected. This bottle seemed rather volatile on the nose with diesel fumes obstructing much in the way of terroir expression. The palate is viscous on the entry with lower acidity than Sauzet’s own Bâtard, but it is rather monotone and lacking delineation on the finish. This is a perplexing showing and I will seek to re-taste it. Neal Martin30th November 2014
