Lying just to the west of neighbouring Château Latour, Batailley owns a 57-hectare estate planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The 2018 vintage is beautifully scented and rather seductive, filled with aromas of sweet cherries, crushed rocks, cloves and cinnamon. It`s a sleek and structured wine, with layers of pure fruit on the palate. The tannins are ripe and quite approachable, with a lively lift to the finish.

Damson and black cherry, creme de cassis and baking spices. A warm vintage and there is a luscious spice-driven character that makes it a little atypical, with creamy vanilla, coriander and baking spices. We are still on the Left Bank here, but a less austere and structured version. A change in the estate's internal winemaker at this point, with the departure of Arnaud Durand and arrival of Benoit Bouchonneau. This is also the vintage where the team introduced 3rd wine Pauillac de Batailley. Axel Marchal and Valerie Lavigne consultants, Philippe Casteja owner.Jane Anson12th May 2026

The 2018 Batailley has a deep garnet-purple color. It opens with notes of cedar, clove oil, and wild sage, over a core of redcurrants, black cherries, and cassis, plus a hint of tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers great intensity of tightly wound fruit, framed by grainy tannins and compelling tension, finishing long.Lisa Perrotti-Brown9th February 2023

The 2018 Batailley, matured in 60% new oak, is almost identical on the nose as I found it in barrel, decked out with attractive black cherries and cassis notes, the cedar element a little heightened and freshly rolled tobacco notes developing with aeration. Very fine delineation here, and the oak is well integrated. The balanced palate offers fine tannins that frame the blackberry and bilberry fruit. The salinity comes through nicely on the finish, which is less silky than before, but it waves adieu with a long spicy aftertaste. Very fine and very Batailley.Neal Martin21st March 2021

Chateau Batailley

A Rising Star in Pauillac

The historic Château Batailley is a Fifth Growth estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Situated on a plateau to the west of the First Growth of Mouton Rothschild, Batailley is one of the oldest chateaux in the Bordeaux region, dating from the 15th century.

In the past two decades, there has been a significant upturn in quality of the Château Batailley grand vin – a typical Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine exhibits classic Pauillac character – concentrated flavour, good structure and ripe tannins.

Vinification at Château Batailley is conventional: grapes are de-stemmed and fermented in steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in both steel tanks and barrels, and the wine is matured barriques (about half of them new) for 16-18 months before bottling. Since 2014, Batailley has produced a second wine, Lions de Batailley, using grapes from younger vines on the 55ha estate. This wine is in a comparable style to the grand vin.
