The 2017 release from 5ème Cru Classé Château Batailley is tremendous. A perfect blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, this has all the classic hallmarks of fine Pauillac – deep cassis-driven fruit, liquorice, cedar and bay. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers sumptuous black fruits with fine-grained tannins and a delicately floral finish.

Of all the underestimated vintages in Pauillac, it is perhaps 2017 that I would most suggest that people get on board with, and here is a great example of why. Generous, soft, tender tannins, a ton of graphite and blackberry, hedgerow, mouthwatering oyster shell on the finish. Soft brambled fruits, no need to wait to begin enjoying, what's not to like here? Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Batailley gallops out of the gates with notes of baked redcurrants, black raspberries and blackcurrant pastilles plus wafts of cedar chest, bay leaves and rosehip tea. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating black fruits with a firm, grainy texture and lively lift to the finish.Lisa Perrotti-Brown16th March 2020

The 2017 Batailley has a perfumed bouquet, quite floral for this property, with violets infusing the vivacious red berry fruit. The palate is a little chewy on the entry, but it pulls through nicely towards a cohesive, dense finish. It feels primal, more so than its peers at the moment. Hopefully it will develop more personality with bottle age...I think it will. Neal Martin1st February 2020

Chateau Batailley

A Rising Star in Pauillac

The historic Château Batailley is a Fifth Growth estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Situated on a plateau to the west of the First Growth of Mouton Rothschild, Batailley is one of the oldest chateaux in the Bordeaux region, dating from the 15th century.

In the past two decades, there has been a significant upturn in quality of the Château Batailley grand vin – a typical Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine exhibits classic Pauillac character – concentrated flavour, good structure and ripe tannins.

Vinification at Château Batailley is conventional: grapes are de-stemmed and fermented in steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in both steel tanks and barrels, and the wine is matured barriques (about half of them new) for 16-18 months before bottling. Since 2014, Batailley has produced a second wine, Lions de Batailley, using grapes from younger vines on the 55ha estate. This wine is in a comparable style to the grand vin.
