Batailley 2014 is a structured Pauillac, exhibiting striking concentration and firm tannins. This vintage comprises 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot. The wine has undergone maturation in 60% new oak, contributing to its complexity without overpowering the fruit. Château Batailley is a Fifth Growth estate with roots dating back to the 18th century, owned by the Borie family.

The 2014 Batailley has an attractive bouquet, lilting scents of redcurrant and raspberry coulis, quite floral and very precise. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, good depth and body, rounded for Batailley and less austere than usual. It feels closed towards the finish, tight-lipped, but there is certainly grip and presence here. It will require several years in bottle before it can show its true potential, but there is a sense of class to this Batailley that I suspect will become more evident with maturity. Tasted twice with consistent notes. - Neal Martin

The 2014 Batailley has a backward nose, black fruit, dried blood and white pepper (like before); it is very classic in style, but I would have liked a bit more brightness and vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, just a soupçon of greenness towards the finish. It`s a decent Batailley, but the quality improved significantly after this vintage. Tasted at Bordeaux Index`s 10-Year-On tasting. Neal Martin19th March 2024

A Rising Star in Pauillac

The historic Château Batailley is a Fifth Growth estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Situated on a plateau to the west of the First Growth of Mouton Rothschild, Batailley is one of the oldest chateaux in the Bordeaux region, dating from the 15th century.

In the past two decades, there has been a significant upturn in quality of the Château Batailley grand vin – a typical Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine exhibits classic Pauillac character – concentrated flavour, good structure and ripe tannins.

Vinification at Château Batailley is conventional: grapes are de-stemmed and fermented in steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in both steel tanks and barrels, and the wine is matured barriques (about half of them new) for 16-18 months before bottling. Since 2014, Batailley has produced a second wine, Lions de Batailley, using grapes from younger vines on the 55ha estate. This wine is in a comparable style to the grand vin.
