Château Batailley is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux, dating from the 15th century. A 5ème Cru Classé, it is known for producing wines of consistently high quality and excellent value. The nose of this 1989 vintage reveals notes of cigar box, leather, blackberries, blackcurrants and forest floor. On the palate, there is a well-balanced palette of flavours, including cassis, blackberries and forest floor against a backdrop of softened tannins. This is mature Bordeaux at its best.

The 1989 Batailley is a wine that I have tasted several times. The quality is bunched up on the nose, still reminiscent of Pomerol with sloes and mocha, slightly herbaceous and loose-knit, yet attractive in its own way. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly ferrous entry and good acidity. Typical of Batailley in this era, it is a little hard and has lost some of its vigor on a finish that some might find austere. To repeat my observation of the previous bottle, the 1989 never quite takes off. Tasted from a bottle in my personal cellar. Neal Martin1st September 2019

A Rising Star in Pauillac

The historic Château Batailley is a Fifth Growth estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Situated on a plateau to the west of the First Growth of Mouton Rothschild, Batailley is one of the oldest chateaux in the Bordeaux region, dating from the 15th century.

In the past two decades, there has been a significant upturn in quality of the Château Batailley grand vin – a typical Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine exhibits classic Pauillac character – concentrated flavour, good structure and ripe tannins.

Vinification at Château Batailley is conventional: grapes are de-stemmed and fermented in steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in both steel tanks and barrels, and the wine is matured barriques (about half of them new) for 16-18 months before bottling. Since 2014, Batailley has produced a second wine, Lions de Batailley, using grapes from younger vines on the 55ha estate. This wine is in a comparable style to the grand vin.
