Château Batailley 1982 is a mature-vintage, Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. One of the oldest wine producers in the Médoc, Château Batailley is currently owned by Borie-Manoux, the négociant firm led by Denise and Emile Castèja. The estate sits on a plateau next to Mouton-Rothschild and covers approximately 57 hectares of vineyard on deep gravel over clay and limestone subsoil. "Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the château, the 1982 Batailley continues to perform well despite never really being the "go-to" Pauillac in this vintage. This might be the best of a dozen or so bottles that I have tasted over the years. The nose here is the most intense that I have encountered, with pencil shavings infusing the black fruit and cedar and a savoury touch that becomes more pronounced as it opens. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, a classic Bordeaux here with good structure and a bullish, tobacco-tinged finish that is conservative but does the job. It cuts away a little too swiftly, but there is just enough dryness to keep you returning for another sip. I can see this continuing on its plateau over the next 15-20 years; and, while it will never challenge the likes of Latour or Pichon-Lalande, it will satisfy a great number of wine lovers." The 1982 Batailley is a vintage that has never quite met my expectations. Now at almost four decades old, I find that the aromatics lack the fruité of its peers, also compared to the superior 1989. Earthy, dried leaves and light smoky aromas gently waft from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins and vestiges of red fruit, a little sour now, but it fades a little towards the peppery finish. This used to be knitted together, but now it feels a little frayed at the seams. Tasted at the château.Neal Martin27th September 2022

A Rising Star in Pauillac

The historic Château Batailley is a Fifth Growth estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Situated on a plateau to the west of the First Growth of Mouton Rothschild, Batailley is one of the oldest chateaux in the Bordeaux region, dating from the 15th century.

In the past two decades, there has been a significant upturn in quality of the Château Batailley grand vin – a typical Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine exhibits classic Pauillac character – concentrated flavour, good structure and ripe tannins.

Vinification at Château Batailley is conventional: grapes are de-stemmed and fermented in steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in both steel tanks and barrels, and the wine is matured barriques (about half of them new) for 16-18 months before bottling. Since 2014, Batailley has produced a second wine, Lions de Batailley, using grapes from younger vines on the 55ha estate. This wine is in a comparable style to the grand vin.
