Barolo Riserva Villero 2001 is an exceptionally rare, single-vineyard release from Vietti, produced only in top years from old vines in Castiglione Falletto. This wine receives extended maturation in large oak casks compared with the standard bottlings, ensuring a more integrated and complex profile upon release. The 2001 growing season was ideal for producing wines of structural longevity and aromatic precision, and this Riserva highlights that potential with notes of coffee beans, eucalyptus and white truffle. With over two decades of cellar age, the tannins have become savoury and resolved, though the wine’s core remains incredibly vibrant and youthful. It is a refined, nuanced Barolo that captures the elegance of the Villero site.

The 2001 Barolo Riserva Villero is the first of the truly great vintages for this wine. Layers of sweet, expressive fruit emerge from this layered, exquisite Barolo. Stylistically the 2001 is quite similar to the 1989 in its inner sweetness, but it has more depth and sheer textural richness. Firm yet beautifully integrated tannins frame the polished finish. This is a magnificent Barolo from Vietti.  Antonio Galloni1st August 2011
