Barolo Monprivato Mascarello 1997, crafted from Nebbiolo grapes, hails from the renowned Mascarello estate, Giuseppe e Figlio, established in 1881 in the Barolo region. Giuseppe Mascarello is widely regarded as one of Barolo’s all-time great producers. The Monprivato vineyard, located in Castiglione Falletto, is one of the most prestigious sites and is only bottled in exceptional vintages. This 1997 vintage reveals the distinct characteristics of its terroir, with a complex profile of dark fruit, leather, and earthy notes. The wine’s structure is defined by its age, offering firm tannins and notable acidity. Barolo Monprivato stands as a testament to traditional winemaking methods and the region`s dedication to quality, making it a key example of Italian winemaking heritage.

Dark ruby. Mauro Mascarello's 1997s are among the most structured wines I have tasted from this vintage. Perhaps caught at an awkward moment, the 1997 did not enjoy a particularly strong showing, despite having been decanted for over five hours. It is a massively endowed, concentrated Barolo, packed with ripe dark fruit and fierce tannins that make it hard to fully evaluate. However, this wine's strong track record, as well as its aging potential (see Issue 3 and 4), gives me no cause for concern with regards the wine's future. In addition, Mascarello's 1997 Riserva Ca' d'Morissio has been nothing short of stunning on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. Antonio Galloni1st October 2005
