Barolo Monfortino 1995 is the pinnacle of traditional winemaking from Giacomo Conterno, produced as a Riserva only in the finest vintages from the Francia vineyard. This wine underwent an exceptionally long maceration of five weeks and aged for seven years in large oak botti before release. The 1995 vintage was noted for its massive tannic structure and austerity in youth, which has now evolved into a magnificent tapestry of tar, dried roses and forest floor. It is a sublime representation of Nebbiolo, showcasing an intense garnet colour and an imposing structure that fills the palate with refined tannins. Freshness and acidity perfectly balance the richness of the fruit, offering a finish of immense length.

The 1995 remains a rather burly Monfortino. Dark-toned fruit, graphite, dried herbs, sage and menthol open with some coaxing. There’s a bit of wildness here, and yet the 1995 is one of the best mature Monfortinos for current drinking. Antonio Galloni18th December 2025

Time and Tradition

Founded in the 1920s, Giacomo Conterno is an iconic Piedmont estate currently owned and operated by Roberto, grandson of winery founder and namesake. Giacomo was assisted by his brother Aldo Conterno for many years before Aldo left to establish his own eponymous winery, pursuing a different style of winemaking altogether.

Along with Gaja and Bruno Giacosa, the winery is considered to be one of the premier producers of fine Barolo. Cascina Francia and Monfortino (only made in select vintages and aged for up to seven years before release) are Conterno's top wines when it comes to Nebbiolo, but the team also make excellent Barbera a'Alba. The Nebbiolo are traditional expressions of the Piedmont terroir in many ways - long-lived and earthy with an elegant savoury character to match alluring ripe red and black fruit notes.
