Barolo Lazzarito 2010 is a site-specific Nebbiolo wine from Vietti, sourced from a prestigious amphitheatre-shaped vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba. This cru is known for its limestone and clay soils that produce Barolos of significant power, structure and longevity. Vietti employs a traditional vinification method with long skin contact and maturation in large oak casks for 30 months to highlight the vineyard’s rugged, savoury character. The 2010 vintage delivers a formidable profile with notes of tobacco, white pepper and wild mint. The tannins are stark and profound, typical of the Serralunga region, providing a taut and mineral finish.

The 2010 Barolo Lazzarito is impeccably polished, silky and refined, especially for a Serralunga Barolo. Mint, violets, black fruit, smoke and deep layers of spices are some of the many notes that flesh out on the inviting, textured finish. Today, the Lazzarito is incredibly primary to the point of being raw and undeveloped, but it is explosive, bursting with energy and flat-out great. This is also the first recent vintage I can remember tasting where the French oak is more in line with the other single-vineyard Barolos.Antonio Galloni1st January 2014

With recently expanded acquisitions in this vineyard cru, the 2010 Barolo Lazzarito shows an expansive personality with pretty tones of crushed rose and red berry fruit that give the wine a delicate, feminine approach. Like the other wines in Luca’s portfolio of new releases, this Barolo is years away from its prime drinking potential. The next ten years should see a steady evolution of aromas stemming from the spice, tar and licorice layers already on display despite the wine’s young age. The mouthfeel is fine and polished with a great sense of purity and balanced freshness. Drink. 2018-2035. - Monica Larner

Cask sample and at the time of tasting they were undecided about whether the wine would be bottled under its vineyard name or disappear in the blend called Castiglione. Just mid concentrated ruby with orange tinges. A little subdued and balsamic with just a touch of cardamom. Much more understated than the 2009. Very stubborn on the palate but so elegant! Very powerfully tannic but balanced. Very understated sweet fruit finish. Gorgeous! (WS)
