Prunotto Barolo Bussia 2020 is a single-vineyard Nebbiolo red wine from the Barolo appellation of Piedmont, northern Italy. Based in Langhe, Prunotto consists of approximately 65 hectares of estate vineyards, including land in several of the Barolo crus, the most famous of which is Vigna Colonnello. It has its origins in the 1920s when Alfredo Prunotto acquired a cooperative winery in Alba called Ai Vini delle Langhe. First produced as a single-vineyard wine in 1961, Barolo Bussia DOCG comes from the magnificent amphitheatre-shaped vineyard in the Bussia Monforte d’Alba area. Aged for at least 18 months in oak barrels, this is an exceptionally scented Barolo, combining notes of dark berries, spices and purple flowers.

The Prunotto 2020 Barolo Bussia is very light and luminous in appearance with shiny ruby highlights. There is a note of sweet cherry, even candied cherry, that appears on the bouquet and just as intensely on the mid-palate. Bussia offers delicate fruit in this rendition without the extra brawn and muscle that is most often associated with this site. Instead, this expression focuses in on finesse and silkiness. Fruit comes from across eight hectares in Bussia, and 32,000 bottles were created as a result. - Monica Larner

The 2020 Barolo Bussia is an elegant, beguiling wine. It offers all the intense spice and balsamic character typical of Bussia, with a bit more presence and overall body than the other wines in the range. It’s a combination that works quite well. This is impeccably done.

Monforte d’Alba. Pale ruby. Subdued and a little shy on the nose. Elegant, almost light red-fruit palate, wired with lively acidity and sandy tannins. Slowly evolves on the finish, this asks for patience as well as a little more bottle age. A pretty wine. (WS)
