Barolo Bussia Aldo Conterno 1997 is produced from carefully selected Nebbiolo grapes, sourced from the renowned Bussia vineyard in Monforte d`Alba. The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-October, ensuring optimal ripeness. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel vats, with extended skin contact lasting 20-30 days, allowing for a complete alcoholic fermentation at varying temperatures, peaking at 32 degrees Celsius. The wine undergoes multiple decantations before aging in oak casks. Aldo Conterno is recognised for his commitment to traditional Barolo winemaking practices, dating back to the early 1900s.
91 Robert Parker
The dense ruby/garnet-colored, tightly-knit 1997 Barolo Bussia Soprana offers notions of earth, cherries, and balsam wood. Full-bodied, with good acidity (particularly for the vintage), moderately high tannin, and a firm finish, it possesses plenty of power. Consume this outstanding effort between 2006-2020. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.
89 Vinous
- Medium-deep red. Superripe, aromatic nose of plum, cherry and loam; not at all over the top. Sweet, pliant and full, with surprising vinosity for the vintage. Not as dense as the '96 but very attractive. Finishes with sweet, fine tannins.

Time and Tradition

Founded in the 1920s, Giacomo Conterno is an iconic Piedmont estate currently owned and operated by Roberto, grandson of winery founder and namesake. Giacomo was assisted by his brother Aldo Conterno for many years before Aldo left to establish his own eponymous winery, pursuing a different style of winemaking altogether.

Along with Gaja and Bruno Giacosa, the winery is considered to be one of the premier producers of fine Barolo. Cascina Francia and Monfortino (only made in select vintages and aged for up to seven years before release) are Conterno's top wines when it comes to Nebbiolo, but the team also make excellent Barbera a'Alba. The Nebbiolo are traditional expressions of the Piedmont terroir in many ways - long-lived and earthy with an elegant savoury character to match alluring ripe red and black fruit notes.
