Barbera d`Alba Francia 2019 is a single-vineyard red from Giacomo Conterno, sourced from the same prestigious Serralunga d’Alba site that produces the legendary Monfortino. The Francia vineyard’s limestone-rich soils provide a structural seriousness and mineral depth that are uncommon for the Barbera variety. Following a 20-month maturation period in large oak casks, the 2019 vintage showcases a dense, muscular profile with vibrant acidity that lightens the full-bodied palate. It offers intense aromas of dark cherry and plum, underpinned by a persistent tannic tension. Conterno’s meticulous approach to viticulture and extended ageing results in a wine with exceptional longevity, far exceeding the typical expectations for Barbera d’Alba.

The 2019 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Francia marries elegance, power and energy. Inky blue/purplish fruit, menthol, licorice and sage are some of the nuances that build as this creamy, textured Barbera slowly opens in the glass. The Francia is wonderfully somber and mysterious, with striking shades of dimension that reveal themselves over time. The 2019 was just bottled, but its pedigree is evident.Antonio Galloni1st September 2021

Time and Tradition

Founded in the 1920s, Giacomo Conterno is an iconic Piedmont estate currently owned and operated by Roberto, grandson of winery founder and namesake. Giacomo was assisted by his brother Aldo Conterno for many years before Aldo left to establish his own eponymous winery, pursuing a different style of winemaking altogether.

Along with Gaja and Bruno Giacosa, the winery is considered to be one of the premier producers of fine Barolo. Cascina Francia and Monfortino (only made in select vintages and aged for up to seven years before release) are Conterno's top wines when it comes to Nebbiolo, but the team also make excellent Barbera a'Alba. The Nebbiolo are traditional expressions of the Piedmont terroir in many ways - long-lived and earthy with an elegant savoury character to match alluring ripe red and black fruit notes.
