The Barbera d’Alba Vigna Francia 2016 from Giacomo Conterno presents a notable representation of its grape. This wine hails from the renowned Francia vineyard, where varying elevations contribute to its complexity. The 2016 vintage reflects a deeper, richer profile compared to lighter expressions. It showcases a distinctive balance between freshness and concentrated fruit character, underpinned by firm acidity. An interesting aspect of Giacomo Conterno is its historic focus on traditional Barolo production, which influences their approach to crafting Barbera, ensuring attention to detail and quality in every bottle.

Conterno's 2016 Barbera d'Alba Francia is a wine of extreme finesse and nuance. It is also dark, inward and mysterious in that it is nowhere near ready to show all of its cards. In most vintages, Francia is a bit more floral and mineral, but in 2016 it is the purity of the fruit that is most striking. I imagine the typical Francia nuances will develop with a few more years in bottle.Antonio Galloni1st November 2018

Time and Tradition

Founded in the 1920s, Giacomo Conterno is an iconic Piedmont estate currently owned and operated by Roberto, grandson of winery founder and namesake. Giacomo was assisted by his brother Aldo Conterno for many years before Aldo left to establish his own eponymous winery, pursuing a different style of winemaking altogether.

Along with Gaja and Bruno Giacosa, the winery is considered to be one of the premier producers of fine Barolo. Cascina Francia and Monfortino (only made in select vintages and aged for up to seven years before release) are Conterno's top wines when it comes to Nebbiolo, but the team also make excellent Barbera a'Alba. The Nebbiolo are traditional expressions of the Piedmont terroir in many ways - long-lived and earthy with an elegant savoury character to match alluring ripe red and black fruit notes.
