Roagna is a family-owned winery with a long history and deep respect for traditional winemaking practices. They are known for producing elegant and long-lived wines, and this Barbaresco is no exception. The term ‘Vecchie Viti’ means ‘old vines’, which indicates that the grapes for this wine come from older vines in the Paje vineyard, typically producing lower yields and more concentrated fruit. The 2017 vintage in Piedmont was characterized by a warm growing season, which resulted in wines with more fruit-forward characteristics and slightly softer tannins compared to cooler vintages. Presented here in a magnum format.

The 2017 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti is fascinating to taste next to the straight Pajè. The old vines bottling shows more depth and muscle, along with a distinctly savory imprint that is quite beguiling. Sweet dried cherry, spice, crushed flowers, mint and incense infuse the 2017 with notable depth. The tannins are a bit unyielding today, so a few years of cellaring at a minimum seem warranted.
