From their base in the coastal city of Sanlucar de Barrameda, the Barbadillo family has forged a reputation as one of the finest sherry producers in Spain. This particular manzanilla has been aged for 8 years, making it a ‘pasada’ style. The extra ageing adds complexity, body and a hint of oxidation as the layer of ‘flor’ begins to thin. It is also an ‘en rama’ – or ‘raw’ – manzanilla, meaning the sherry has been bottled straight from the cask with no fining or filtration.
16.5 Jancis Robinson
Pale gold and more deeply coloured than a typical Manzanilla. Smoky, very smoky. Lapsang and chamomile aromas. Nutty too – like fresh almonds. Very dry and somehow matt on the palate. A little bit chewy in the texture. Plenty of salty tang on the palate and both freshness and a slight creamy quality that you normally get from lees. Lots of flavour but doesn`t really have any highlights. Good length, too. More a food wine than an aperitif. (JH)
