Ausone 2016 is a red wine from the prestigious Saint-Émilion appellation, crafted by winemaker Alain Vauthier at the renowned estate. This Grand Cru Classé A features a balanced blend of 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot, sourced from the estate`s limestone slopes. The 2016 vintage is marked by optimal ripening conditions and results in a fruit-forward profile with 14% alcohol. Aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak, it offers notes of blackcurrants and violets, complemented by a distinct chalky minerality. This wine exemplifies the precision associated with Ausone, showcasing attributes of the limestone terroir and potential for long-term ageing.
100 Jane Anson
Hefty, structured tannins, dark chocolate, espresso and liqourice root. This is powerful, the quality and complexity in full evidence from beginning to end, unrolls in waves and uses its pummice stone and slate-edged structure to climb towards a mouthwatering finish. A wine that I have tasted twice in the past two months, and you feel it is both barely showing its hand, and yet aleady effortless asserting its brilliance. 40hl/ha, 80% new oak. The 2016 Ausone initially left me nonplussed, and so I left my glass for 10 or 15 minutes before returning to a different wine. The nose had opened up to reveal red cherries, wild strawberry, rose petals and touches of crushed stone and pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and perfectly matched acidity. This is very refined and fleshy, almost Burgundian toward the finish, with just the right amount of bitterness. A brilliant wine, but it needs time. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Neal Martin1st August 2020
