Ausone 2015 is a red wine from the prestigious Saint-Émilion appellation, crafted as a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc. One of only four estates awarded the Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) status, Château Ausone is situated on a 7-hectare limestone plateau, which contributes a unique minerality to the wine. The 2015 vintage showcases a concentrated profile with notes of dark fruits, floral hints and mineral undertones. This wine is characterised by its structured tannins and remarkable length on the palate, reflecting the estate`s commitment to craftsmanship and terroir expression.

Vibrant medium intensity cherry red, the limestone fingerprint clear even visually in that it is more jewel-like than most in the vintage. A masterclass in what slate scrape and pumice stone means when talking about texture in a wine, set against a caress of black cherry, raspberry, white tea, pomegranate, gunsmoke, leather, exceptional with a juicy finish, truly outstanding - and this is a higher score than I gave it back in 2022 in a vertical at the estate. 85% new oak for ageing.Jane Anson19th February 2025

The 2015 Ausone was tasted directly against the Cheval Blanc, which is always an intriguing pairing. This is extremely pure, opulent and superbly delineated, with Morello cherry, pencil lead, camphor and licorice aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy, generous and lightly spiced, with saturated tannins and cough candy-infused red fruit. It tightens up a little toward the finish but lingers long in the mouth. Excellent. Tasted at the 2015 Ten-Year-On tasting at Bordeaux Index. Neal Martin3rd June 2025

An Historic Saint-Émilion Estate

Named after the Roman poet Ausonius, who kept around 100 acres of vineyards in and around the area, Château Ausone is one of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank, close to the actual town of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. The smallest of the First Growths - with only seven hecatres of vines - 10% of which goes into producing the second wine, La Chapelle d'Ausone.

With its characteristic fresh limestone soils, Château Ausone produces wonderfully mineral red wines, all farmed organically. The key grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot also planted.
