The 2014 Château Ausone is a Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A wine composed of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot. Ausone maintains seven hectares of organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards located atop the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion and extending down the côtes. This vintage is noted for its high proportion of Cabernet Franc, which lends aromatic intensity and a sense of freshness to the final wine. It offers aromas of mineral-rich red berry fruit, oregano, orange blossom and blackcurrant. The palate is medium-bodied and poised, with a filigree of fine tannin and a precise, tensile finish.

A poised, controlled and slow-revealing Ausone, as ever you feel at the 10 year mark that it is just starting to get revved up. The layers of subtle complexity are stunning, peony, rosebud, raspberry, creme caramel, salted cracker, so delicate and yet relentless, with a fresh petals fragrance that is hard to capture, keeps you invested and looking for another sip. The limestone soils come through with a mouthwatering rise through the finish. 85% new oak.Jane Anson8th February 2024

The 2014 Ausone, a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, was matured in barrel for 20 months with 85% new oak. Compared to the Chapelle d`Ausone, this Grand Vin demanded gentle coaxing from the glass. It eventually unfurls to reveal mineral-rich red berry fruit, oregano, orange blossom and later on blackcurrant winegums. It displays superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin. There is an almost sorbet-like freshness conferred upon this Saint Emilion by the growing season, very harmonious and poised with one of the most precise and tensile finishes that you will find this vintage. One of the stars of the vintage, this may merit a higher score with bottle age. This is a great success. - #ERROR!

The 2014 Ausone has a surprisingly backward nose that demands coaxing from the glass. Broody black fruit, forest floor, bay leaf and pressed flower scents commingle with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, linear and "correct". It is fresher than some of its peers, though it does not quite "kick on" toward the finish. It has a firm grip and is a little serious in style, though I am intrigued to see how this will develop in the bottle. Though less outgoing than the bottle tasted the previous week, this remains a fine Ausone. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting. Neal Martin19th March 2024

The 2014 Ausone is deep garnet-brick in color. A herbal waft of dried sage opens the nose, leading to a core of kirsch, redcurrant jelly, and crushed rocks with a touch of charcoal. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers bright red berry preserves flavors with herbal accents and a fine-grained texture, finishing long and lifted.Lisa Perrotti-Brown5th March 2024

Chateau Ausone

An Historic Saint-Émilion Estate

Named after the Roman poet Ausonius, who kept around 100 acres of vineyards in and around the area, Château Ausone is one of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank, close to the actual town of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. The smallest of the First Growths - with only seven hecatres of vines - 10% of which goes into producing the second wine, La Chapelle d'Ausone.

With its characteristic fresh limestone soils, Château Ausone produces wonderfully mineral red wines, all farmed organically. The key grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot also planted.
