Château Ausone, situated in Saint-Émilion, enjoys a stellar reputation for crafting some of the best red wines within the appellation and the broader region. In recent years, Alain Vauthier has overseen significant advancements at Ausone, assuming complete responsibility for winemaking and property management at his family`s estate. The 2010 vintage is a blend composed of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, aged in new oak barrels for 20 months. Despite an exceptionally dry growing season that presented its share of challenges, this vintage ultimately yielded greatness.

The 2010 Ausone has a rich, opulent, modern style bouquet with crème de cassis and blueberry aromas tinged with crushed violet. There is plenty of new oak here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a ton of blue and black fruit. It does not quite deliver the personality of its peers, although the velvety texture is very alluring. Maybe it will develop into something more interesting with bottle age, possibly going through a close phase? Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. Neal Martin1st April 2020

An Historic Saint-Émilion Estate

Named after the Roman poet Ausonius, who kept around 100 acres of vineyards in and around the area, Château Ausone is one of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank, close to the actual town of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. The smallest of the First Growths - with only seven hecatres of vines - 10% of which goes into producing the second wine, La Chapelle d'Ausone.

With its characteristic fresh limestone soils, Château Ausone produces wonderfully mineral red wines, all farmed organically. The key grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot also planted.
