Ausone 2001 is a prestigious wine from the renowned Château Ausone, a property with a winemaking history dating back to the Roman era. While Château Ausone once held the coveted Premier Grand Cru Classé A status in Saint-Émilion, it made headlines in 2022 by voluntarily withdrawing from the classification, joining the likes of Cheval Blanc and other notable estates. Despite its departure from the ranking, Château Ausone continues to command immense respect as one of the finest wines within the appellation. Its reputation as a pinnacle of quality and excellence remains firmly intact among wine enthusiasts and experts alike. The 2001, marked by ideal growing conditions, exhibits a complex structure with restrained tannins and pronounced acidity, indicative of its age.

The 2001 Ausone has put on even more weight than I anticipated. The “wine of the vintage,” this inky/purple-colored 2001 boasts a provocative, floral perfume of crushed stones, raspberries, blackberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and smoke. What makes it so sensational are the layers of flavor and nuances that unfold as the wine sits in the glass as well as on the palate. This is an extraordinarily intense effort, but remarkably elegant and well-balanced. It ideally needs another decade of cellaring; it should last for 4-5 decades! Alain Vauthier is a perfectionist, which is evidenced by what he has produced over the last half dozen vintages at Ausone. Kudos to readers lucky enough to find a bottle or two ... and live long enough to enjoy them in their prime. Anticipated maturity. 2012-2050+. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Medium ruby. Tarry black fruits and minerals on the nose. Began extremely tight and austere, with penetrating black fruit and mineral flavors. With aeration, this showed more flesh and complexity, hinting at blackberry, graphite, espresso and sexy oak. For such a vibrant, juicy, minerally wine, the tannins are extremely fine. This may well merit an even higher score 12 to 15 years down the road.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2004

Very, very deep, thick purple. Deeply scented, wild black fruits on the nose. Not especially intense, but very well done. Quite painful acidity. Less charming than 2000, but very chewy. Correct. Very, very dry end. (JR)

An Historic Saint-Émilion Estate

Named after the Roman poet Ausonius, who kept around 100 acres of vineyards in and around the area, Château Ausone is one of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank, close to the actual town of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. The smallest of the First Growths - with only seven hecatres of vines - 10% of which goes into producing the second wine, La Chapelle d'Ausone.

With its characteristic fresh limestone soils, Château Ausone produces wonderfully mineral red wines, all farmed organically. The key grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot also planted.
