The 1995 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by early flowering, and despite the long hot summer, there was no drought stress. Merlot and Cabernet Franc excelled on the Right Bank, giving rich, full-bodied wines such as this Gran Vin from Château Ausone. Lovely bouquet of redcurrants, plums, dark chocolate and sandalwood. Resolving, but still slightly firm tannins carry red fruits and earthy flavours. The wine is in its peak drinking window now.
92 Vinous
Deep violet-tinged ruby. Lively cassis, black cherry, tobacco and smoky oak aromas. Lush and dense, though a bit shocked by the bottling. Combines the penetrating, juicy quality and class of previous vintages of this wine with the more opulent texture and suaver tannins craved by so many of today Bordeaux lovers. May well eventually merit a higher score, but will it surpass the '96?Stephen Tanzer1st May 1998

Chateau Ausone

An Historic Saint-Émilion Estate

Named after the Roman poet Ausonius, who kept around 100 acres of vineyards in and around the area, Château Ausone is one of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank, close to the actual town of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. The smallest of the First Growths - with only seven hecatres of vines - 10% of which goes into producing the second wine, La Chapelle d'Ausone.

With its characteristic fresh limestone soils, Château Ausone produces wonderfully mineral red wines, all farmed organically. The key grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot also planted.
