Ausone 1975, from the renowned Saint-Émilion estate, offers a blend primarily of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. This vintage reflects the unique terroir of the region, presenting a character shaped by the limestone and clay soils. Ausone is produced in limited quantities, typically around 20,000 bottles annually, and the estate itself boasts a history dating back to Roman times. The wine is notable for its balance and the evolution of its flavours over decades, showcasing the influence of time on its structure.

The 1975 Ausone is a vintage that I had never tasted before. There is some maturity on the brick rim although it is commensurate with its age. The palate is a little loose-knit with leather and rusty piping usurping the black fruit. The palate is full-mature with soft tannin, quite leathery in style with a little dryness towards the finish. But there is a sense of vitality here unlike the preceding three vintages. You just come away thinking that any bottles should be drunk soon. Tasted at the Ausone vertical in London.

An Historic Saint-Émilion Estate

Named after the Roman poet Ausonius, who kept around 100 acres of vineyards in and around the area, Château Ausone is one of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank, close to the actual town of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. The smallest of the First Growths - with only seven hecatres of vines - 10% of which goes into producing the second wine, La Chapelle d'Ausone.

With its characteristic fresh limestone soils, Château Ausone produces wonderfully mineral red wines, all farmed organically. The key grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot also planted.
