Château Ausone is a Premier Grand Cru Classé ‘A’ property in Saint-Émilion producing some of the most highly sought-after wines in Bordeaux from its 7ha of vineyards. A beautiful blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc boasting a spiced, mocha nose, a generous palate with elegant smooth tannins and a long finish.
77 Vinous
The 1966 Ausone is a disappointing wine in the context of one of the best vintages of that decade. Smudged on the nose with pencil shaving and singed leather scents, it develops caramel aromas with time and then skulks off within four or five minutes. The palate is medium-bodied with soy-tinged black fruit, some VA issues and a short, rather astringent finish. Any bottles should be drunk in the near future. Tasted at the Ausone vertical in London.Neal Martin1st March 2018

An Historic Saint-Émilion Estate

Named after the Roman poet Ausonius, who kept around 100 acres of vineyards in and around the area, Château Ausone is one of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank, close to the actual town of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. The smallest of the First Growths - with only seven hecatres of vines - 10% of which goes into producing the second wine, La Chapelle d'Ausone.

With its characteristic fresh limestone soils, Château Ausone produces wonderfully mineral red wines, all farmed organically. The key grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot also planted.
