Aubert is a boutique Chardonnay and Pinot Noir estate that produces wine from single-vineyard sites in Napa Valley and Sonoma. Founded by husband-and-wife Mark and Teresa Aubert in 1999, it is regarded to be one of California’s cult wine labels. Planted with one of their rarest Chardonnay clones, Powder House reflects the distinct, powdery Goldridge soils on this hilly site. Enjoyable now, the 2021 vintage will soar in quality over the next decade and can be comfortably cellared for a span of 10 to 15 years.

The 2021 Chardonnay Powder House was quite closed when I tasted it from tank just prior to bottling. It comes across pretty much the same today. Readers are best advised to wait, or to at least give this a healthy decant. Pear, lemon peel, white flowers and crushed rocks open gradually, but the Powder House is in no mood to show its cards today.

Sublime Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

Aubert was founded by Mark and Theresa Aubert in 2000, located on the famous Silverado trail in Calistoga. Before he and his partner opened Aubert, Mark had gained experience at the Peter Michael Winery and Colgin Cellars and also made wine at a 'custom crush' facility in California. Aubert have some proprietary vineyards, around three and half acres in Sonoma, which they bottle under the 'UV' label. The remainder of the fruit is sourced from selected vineyards across Sonoma and Napa.

In the world of wine, Aubert is really a byword for world-class single vineyard or single block Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vineyards they source from represent a mix of terroirs and include some old vines as well as some recent plantings. What remains consistent through all these bottlings is the preservation of fruit character and an extreme obsession with quality.
