Ardbeg 8 Year Old is an age-statement Islay single malt whisky produced at the Ardbeg Distillery on the isle of Islay. A deliberately challenging peated single malt, the Ardbeg 8 Year Old is a whisky designed to provoke discussion. Producer note. "Intense with a burst of charcoal, creosote, tar and treacle toffee, with curious hints of something vegetal, like fennel, celery and green peppers. Once these subside, there are hints of milk chocolate, aniseed and woodsmoke. With a little drop of water, some more herbal notes appear, like fennel, coriander and lavender, along with some characteristic Ardbeg aromatic woodsmoke and a hint of fresh, salty sea spray."
One of Scotland's most famous distilleries, Ardbeg is located on the isle of Islay, off the rugged west coast of Scotland. Founded in the early 1800s by John McDougall, the distillery has long been renowned for the heavily peaty spirits that flows from its stills. Ardbeg fell silent for eight years in the 1980s and distillation ceased. It was closed again the mid-1990s shortly before it was acquired by Glenmorangie, who restored the distillery to its former glory.
The distillery maintains around four core expressions, including the highly acclaimed Uigeadail, and regularly releases a number of themed limited editions as part of their committee release series and the annual "Ardbeg Day" celebrations.
