Ardbeg 16 Year Old Single Sherry Cask 86 for Fortnum & Mason 1990 presents a rare glimpse into the distillery’s post-mothballing era and its innovative maturation techniques. Distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2007 at 52.8% ABV, this Islay single malt matured in a first-fill Sherry butt, yielding a distinctively rich profile. The whisky exhibits intertwining notes of maritime peat smoke with dark chocolate, orange marmalade, and a briny treacle finish, underpinned by the intensity of charcoal embers. Only 300 hand-signed bottles commemorate Fortnum & Mason’s 300th anniversary, making this release a notable example of early 1990s Ardbeg, ideal for discerning collectors.

An Islay Icon

One of Scotland's most famous distilleries, Ardbeg is located on the isle of Islay, off the rugged west coast of Scotland. Founded in the early 1800s by John McDougall, the distillery has long been renowned for the heavily peaty spirits that flows from its stills. Ardbeg fell silent for eight years in the 1980s and distillation ceased. It was closed again the mid-1990s shortly before it was acquired by Glenmorangie, who restored the distillery to its former glory.

The distillery maintains around four core expressions, including the highly acclaimed Uigeadail, and regularly releases a number of themed limited editions as part of their committee release series and the annual "Ardbeg Day" celebrations.
