Ao Yun is the premium Chinese wine created by LVMH, first produced in 2013. Each of Ao Yun’s 314 parcels spread across four villages – Adong, Xidang, Sinong and Shuori – has its own subtleties. This release is the 2018 vintage, a blend composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 7% Syrah and 4% Petit Verdot. It is a full-bodied wine, showing notes of blackberries, thyme, liquorice, cloves and a hint of earthiness.

Ao Yun assembles its grand vin from four villages. Xidang, Sinong, Shuori and Adong (where the winery is based). Xidang is the lowest in elevation, and Adong has the highest altitude. Ao Yun has thus been philosophically all about the blend, but as this LVMH venture discovers more about its vines in each of those villages (and is also extending planting in some), it is perhaps unsurprising that winemaker Maxence Dulou has decided to produce some individual village expressions. The 2018 Adong Village Cru Chardonnay has a moderate to deep lemon appearance. On the nose, there is some ripe peach, apricot, nectarine and lemon peel with a touch of savory oak. On the palate, the 2018 Adong Village Cru Chardonnay is medium-bodied with some lively acidity, well-integrated alcohol and a touch of creamy lees. There is ripe stone fruit in what is largely a fruit-focused expression. With its moderate to longer length, it is an interesting first outing for Ao Yun in producing a Chardonnay from this village. This will drink well over the next two years.
