Antica Terra Ceras Pinot Noir 2011 is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Eola-Amity Hills AVA in Oregon. This wine reflects the vineyard`s geological complexity, offering a clear expression of its predominantly volcanic soils. The wine exhibits tart red fruits alongside earthy notes of forest floor. Winemaker Maggie Harrison, previously associated with Sine Qua Non, maintains strict standards of low yields and minimal intervention to showcase the vineyard`s terroir. This magnum format enhances the wine`s maturation potential, allowing for further evolution in the bottle.

Antica Terra’s 2011 Pinot Noir Ceras – the inaugural vintage for this cuvee, or at least under this name – is blended with a nose for achieving “minerality and delicacy, more herbal than floral. We do the blending completely blind,” she adds, “and only then discover which sites and lots we chose.” Close to half of the fruit for this 2011 came from Antica Terra; 20% from Shea; and the balance from Cherry Grove and Highland. Strongly marrowy as well as smoked meat characteristics vie with vintage-typically tart-edged sour cherry and red currant, black tea and toasted oak resin adding additionally smoky nuances. Firm in feel and persistently satisfyingly juicy, this draws on fruit pits, toasted shrimp shells and iodine for piquant finishing counterpoint and mouthwatering savor. It should be fascinating to follow through at least 2018, and hopefully well beyond. - David Schildknecht

Bright ruby-red. Sexy, floral- and spice-accented aromas of red berry liqueur and potpourri, with a hint of vanilla in the background. Silky and precise, offering energetic raspberry and floral pastille flavors and a touch of dusty minerals. Finishes lively, focused and long, with resonating spiciness, a hint of anise and slow-building tannins.Josh Raynolds1st July 2013

Bold and Beautiful

Antica Terra is the exciting project of ex-Sine Qua Non assistant winemaker Maggie Harrison in the Eola-Amity Hills of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. This large-scale investment project was established in a bid to create Oregon Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays (though Roussanne features too) that would stand shoulder to shoulder with the great wines in the world.

The primary focus is Pinot Noir, with no fewer than seven different Pinot Noir clones grown on the estate. Forensic attention is paid to the quality of the grapes which produce Antica Terra wines. Harrison’s winemaking, meanwhile, is very simple: natural ferments, manually punchdowns and foot-treading of the grapes, siphons and buckets used to transfer wine into barrel rather than electric pumps, no cold settling, no racking; then simply ageing on the lees before bottling without fining or filtration. The result is wines of exceptional quality and immense personality.
