Château Angélus is one of the largest and most prestigious St-Emilion estates and was more recently promoted to top tier 1er Grand Cru Classé ‘A’ status in the 2012 St-Emilion reclassification. Angélus tends to be full-bodied, concentrated and silkily textured, with classic notes of black fruits, earth, tobacco and dried roses. The 1998 release is comprised of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc and should be approaching the peak of its powers.

The 1998 Angelus has always been an impressive Saint-Émilion and at 20-years of age that has not changed in recent years. Showing the first signs of ageing on the rim, it has a glorious bouquet that is midway between primary and secondary aromas: cranberry, crushed strawberry and warm leather on an antique armchair; embers and a light marine tincture. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannin, a mixture of red and black fruit mixed with clove, cedar and a sprinkling of powdered dark chocolate. There remains a firm backbone to this Angelus: focused and precise. It is a wine to either drink now or age over the next 15 years. The choice is yours. Tasted at the château. A Right Bank Institution

This prestigious Saint-Émilion estate produces superb Right Bank Bordeaux and has been in the de Boüard family since 1782. Spanning 39ha, the Château Angélus estate is planted to 50% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, and full conversion to completely organic farming began in 2018.

The estate's vines are positioned with perfect southern exposure on a sloping vineyard where the soils on lower potion are sandier and the upper portion richer in limestone and clay - perfect for both Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Along with the Grand Vin, a second wine, Le Carillon d’Angélus, as well as a third wine, No 3 d’ Angélus, are also made.
