Quintarelli Amarone Classico 2011 is a full-bodied red wine produced in the appassimento style from partially air-dried grapes in the Amarone DOCG of Valpolicella in the Veneto region of northern Italy. Giuseppe (Bepe) Quintarelli was one of the true icons of Italian wine until his death in 2012, celebrated for his hedonistic and long-lived Valpolicellas, reciotos and Amarones. Bepe worked with uncompromising attention to detail and patience at a time when the rest of Italy was embracing the efficiencies occasioned by the industrialisation of wine. His Amarones are matured for a minimum of seven years in Slavonian oak and are among the most sought-after wines in Italy. The estate is now run by Bepe`s daughter, Fiorenza, and her husband, Giampaolo Grigoli. "The Quintarelli Giuseppe 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva represents the last vintage seen by Bepi himself. Giuseppe Quintarelli died in January 2012 at age 84 following his struggle with Parkinson`s disease. There`s magic in this wine, and we raise a glass to the master of Negrar. It delivers elegant class and concentration, fruit freshness and the power (plus 16.5% alcohol) that comes with appassimento. It`s an ethereal wine from a hot and dry vintage. There are many contradictions within the bottle, but it ultimately settles on a place of balance and beauty." Wine Advocate, 2021

The 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is spellbinding, showing the power and richness of the vintage with a display of crushed plums and cherry sauce, further complemented by sweet exotic spices. Notes of lavender, milk chocolate and a hint of espresso bean come forward over time. This is pure elegance and class, with velvety textures over a full-bodied frame, yet maintaining perfect balance, giving way to a staining of floral-laced red and blue fruit that can be both tasted and felt as they saturate the senses. A coating of dusty fine tannin settles in, reminding you of just how youthful this is today, but the endnote is freshness. Today, the 2011 can be enjoyed for its primary intensity, but the best is truly yet to come. Eric Guido1st February 2021

Quintarelli Giuseppe

The Godfather of Veneto

The Quintarelli estate in the northern Veronese village of Negrar dates back to 1924 and was founded by Bepe’s father, Silvio. Bepe himself took over in the 1950s, orchestrating a quality revolution through his meticulous work in the vineyard and his uncompromising practices in the cellar. The result was wines of such hedonistic deliciousness that they became some of the most sought-after in Italy; those made before Bepe’s death in 2012 especially so.

At the still family-run estate, Bepe’s legacy continues through his daughter, Fiorenza, along with her husband, Giampaolo, and their children. The core range of wines are those made in the appassimiento style (ie, with partially sun-dried grapes): the Valpolicella Superiore, Amarone, Rosso del Bepi (essentially an Amarone, but released instead of the Amarone in ‘lesser’ vintages) and Recioto. The Amarone, only released in exceptional years, is matured for fully seven years in old Slavonian oak before release. An Amarone Riserva sees 10 years.
