Almaviva was established in 1996 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton-Rothschild and Concha y Toro with the singular aim of producing a Bordeaux First Growth equivalent in Chile. Fruit is sourced from 60 hectares of vines located in the Puente Alto subzone of the Maipo Valley – an area identified as perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon with its stony soils, hot days and cool nights.
Now in its peak drinking window, the fabulous 2002 is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Carmenere and 4% Cabernet Franc.

2002 was not considered a good vintage because there was some rain farther south. But, in Puente Alto, where the vineyards for the 2002 Almaviva are, it was pretty "normal," and they didn't have the rains in March. It was a warm year, without excess. The wine is quite classical, it has evolved nicely, the palate is still pretty lively and balanced, with developed aromas. It is harmonious and in no danger of going down any time soon. This time they only had Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Cabernet Franc (67%, 29% and 4%, respectively). Merlot and Petit Verdot came later. 90 Vinous
Dense ruby color. Cassis, cherry preserve and dark plums tinged with oak spices on the nose, with suggestions of cured tobacco and fresh herbs. A supple midweight with rich dark berry flavors and strong suggestions of bitter chocolate and cracked pepper that build with air. Impressive for the vintage and already showing well.
