Abreu Madrona Ranch 2012 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard, Bordeaux-style red wine from the Napa Valley of California. Madrona Ranch was purchased by David Abreu in 1980. The vineyard encompasses a wide variety of soil types, from red Aiken volcanic soil to white tufa to dark clay. Long-term Abreu winemaker Brad Grimes selects grapes meticulously and vinifies in small batches according to the terroir of particular sections of the vineyard. This offers greater options when blending and ensures a high level of complexity and balance in the final wines. On the 2012. "One of those rare, heavenly wines we’re lucky to be able to taste and drink, the 2012 Madrona Ranch is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon yet has a big chunk of Cabernet Franc (45%) and 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot. It offers an incredible perfume of crème de cassis, spring flowers, liquid violets, spice and tobacco that continues to change and develop with time in the glass. Powerful and full-bodied, yet seamless and elegant, it has sweet, polished tannin, an opulent, weightless texture, and a finish that won’t quit." Jeb Dunnuck, 2017

The 2012 Madrona Ranch is a classic Abreu wine. At ten years of age, the 2012 is still explosive and deep. A rush of dark cherry, plum, espresso, mocha, chocolate and dried flowers. There's a pretty strong oak imprint, as well as less freshness than in the other wines, which surprises me and leads me to think this may not be an especially fine example of this bottling.Antonio Galloni9th May 2024

Terroir Driven Cabernet Sauvignon

David Abreu established his eponymous winery in the 1980s, purchasing the Madrona Ranch and converting it into a mix of farmland and vineyards. The Thorevilos and Capella vineyards were added a few years later and Las Posadas, a Howell Mountain vineyard, was added to the estate's holdings in the year 2000. The result is something quite unique in Napa - a collection of distinct sites all producing world class, terroir-driven Cabernet Sauvignon.

Winemaker for the last 20 years is former chef turned viticulturist Brad Grimes. Brad keeps the focus of the estate firmly set on the founder's original goal - to emulate the finest wines of Pauillac and Margaux. Based on the long waiting list and never-ended near-perfect critic scores, he's hit a home run in that department.
