The 2018 vintage was a spectacular Shiraz vintage in the Hunter Valley. Dry, warm conditions meant cropping levels were smaller than average and produced wines of great concentration and length of flavour. Vat 9 is a blend of the best old blocks that sit on the strip of red soil that runs through the Tyrrell`s winery. Intense purple in colour, lifted spice and a pretty red berry nose with a subtle oak lift. The palate is medium bodied showing soft sweet fruits. Subtle oak enhances the mid palate which is complemented by the fine, clean acid structure and long tannins. A classic Vat 9 that will have a long life in the cellar.

The 2018 Vat 9 Hunter Shiraz leads with a meaty yet fruit-forward nose redolent of raspberries and licorice, roasted meat crust and that silky ferruginous quality that Hunter Shiraz can achieve. The acidity is firm and bright, and while I like this wine very much, it has a chunky quality to it. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. - Erin Larkin

Aged in new and old large French oak casks for 15 months.
Bitter, tart fruit gives this a hardness on the palate, as does the acidity. Soft tannins, medium body. Not much fragrance peeping through. (RH)
