Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2020 is a barrel-fermented Chardonnay produced from the best old-vine Chardonnay fruit on the Leeuwin estate in Margaret River, Australia. Undoubtedly one of the finest examples of Chardonnay being produced in Australia. "The 2020 vintage in Margaret River was moderate to warm and will be forever remembered for the incredibly compacted harvest period, which started two weeks earlier than the 2019 harvest before it and was all wrapped up by Easter—that`s largely unheard of. The 2020 Art Series Chardonnay leads with power and density, not unlike the 2018 before it. Tight and green in the glass, you get salted pear, white peach, nectarine, red apple skins, preserved citrus and crushed shell. The wine has minerality and tension within the confines of the opulent fruit. Staggering length, as usual." Wine Advocate, 2023

The 2020 Art Series Chardonnay favorably reflects the positive aspects of the 2020 growing season, which was warm and dry, and at that time, it was the earliest harvest start time that Margaret River had experienced. That statistic has since been overtaken by ensuing vintages—2024 is a stark example. This wine is tightly coiled and colored white in its characters. nectarine, white peach, white currant, white pepper and pineapple husk. I recall soon after its release in 2022, I tasted this wine blind at one of my wine group nights, and at that tightly bound stage, I couldn`t see Margaret River nor the seasonal warmth in the glass. It has since fleshed out somewhat and now is looking more like its place and year. The acidity is juicy and almost puckering in its intensity, and it lingers long after the wine has gone. Sour cream dusted with light-green florals. Understated to the point of introversion but not austere. The sour-cream note on the nose brings a carefully sculpted richness, curve and depth on the palate to which pan-warmed pistachio and cobnut notes bring a nutty dimension. There`s a very soft haze of cedary spices, a razor blade of lime-saturated acidity running the length, and pressed-linen texture that folds into the finish. You could drink this now, but it will go the distance. (TC)
