La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 2015 is a medium-to-full-bodied Tempranillo-based red wine produced in the Rioja region of Spain. Founded in 1890, La Rioja Alta continues to be a leading producer of traditionally made Rioja wines. Gran Reserva 904 is one of two gran reservas produced by the winery and is only released in exceptional vintages. The 2015 vintage is the current release and is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. The wine was aged in American oak barrels, with racking every six months, for four years before being bottled in 2020. The 2015 vintage has been praised by winemaker José Saenz as "without a doubt, one of the best ever for us in Rioja". "A perfumed nose of plums, mulberries, mushrooms, caramel, sweet tobacco and sweet spices. Full-bodied with velvety, fine tannins and lively acidity. Balanced and supple with a creamy texture. Delicate and precise with a long, polished finish." James Suckling, 2020

Vivid ruby. Expansive red and blue fruit preserve, tobacco, potpourri, spice and botanical herb aromas, with vanilla and smoky mineral notes emerging as the wine opens up. Sappy, penetrating and gently chewy on the palate, offering vibrant, mineral- and spice-accented black raspberry, bitter cherry and rose pastille flavors that deepen and turn sweeter on the back half. Shows sharp focus and floral lift on the impressively long, youthfully tannic finish, which leaves behind notes of candied blue fruits and spicecake.Josh Raynolds1st April 2021

I tasted again the 2015 Gran Reserva 904 Selección Especial, a blend of 90% Tempranillo from their vineyards in Villalba, Briñas and Rodezno, with 10% Graciano from the Montecillo Vineyard in Fuenmayor that was picked 23 days later than the Tempranillo that I had already tasted in mid-2022 before the wine was released. Time in bottle has done it some good, polishing the strong tannins that are the signature from 2015, though they are still not fully resolved, and a few more years in bottle will do it good. It's tasty, very classical, balanced and fresh. Impressive for such a powerful year. It was bottled in March 2020 after it matured in used American oak barrels for four years.Luis Gutierrez29th February 2024
