Drawn from the last handful of casks laid down at the now-vanished Karuizawa distillery — closed by owners Mercian in 2001 and kept alive through independent bottler Number One Drinks Company — this release is widely regarded as the single most important bottling in modern Japanese whisky. Distilled on 1 February 1960 from a sherry hogshead and bottled on 1 January 2013 at 51.8% ABV, it spent a full 52 years maturing, making it the oldest whisky Karuizawa ever produced and, at the time, the oldest Japanese whisky ever bottled.
Only 41 bottles were produced, each individually named after the unique netsuke (carved wooden figure) hanging from its neck — among them "The Cockerel," "The Wanderer," "The Archer," "The Poet," and "Zodiac Rat" — and presented in a bespoke wooden puzzle-box case with hand-painted calligraphy labels by Soji Noshimoto. The whisky itself is described as opening with notes of "old woods in autumn," leading to a palate of "dense black fruits," reflecting decades of concentrated sherry-cask influence.
