Giscours 1996 is a red wine from the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, produced by Château Giscours, a classified Third Growth estate established in 1855. The blend comprises 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. The 1996 vintage is regarded as a pivotal year, benefitting from a dry summer that ensured optimal ripeness for Cabernet. This wine was vinified to achieve an alcohol level of 12.5% and matured for 18 months in French oak barrels. Its profile reveals notes of blackcurrants, cedarwood, and dried violets, supported by a firm tannic backbone, indicative of its capability for aging and classic Margaux character.

The 1996 Giscours is a vintage that I have not tasted for many years. It has an agreeable nose of dark berry fruit, leather and sous-bois, a little introspective perhaps, and missing a bit of éclat. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Like the 1995, this is a bit oaky and dried out the finish, making it less interesting than older or more recent vintages. I cannot see this going anywhere. Neal Martin2nd April 2025

Bright ruby with some yellow at the rim. Light, sweet rather ‘bloody’ nose. Losing fruit but with a bit of alcohol sweetness rather intruding on the finish. Drying out. Some cheesiness on the finish. (JR)
