Finca Villacreces Ribera del Duero 2020 exemplifies the rich terroir of this prestigious Spanish wine region. Located in Quintanilla de Onésimo, the estate is part of the renowned `golden mile` alongside Vega Sicilia and Pingus. Acquired by the Antón family in 2003, the vineyards employ integrated viticulture, promoting natural treatments to enhance vine health. With 85% Tempranillo, the wine reflects the sandy soils` influence, while 5% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon add complexity. The estate spans 64 hectares at 735 metres elevation, ensuring distinct low yields of concentrated grapes.

Having the 2019 to taste next to the 2020 Finca Villacreces reveals how the quality of the 2020 tannins are more elegant, and the wine comes through as finer-boned and fresher too, with power, concentration and structure. It was produced with 90% Tempranillo, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Merlot and has 14.1% alcohol and very good freshness. It fermented in raw concrete vats and 10,000-liter oak vats and matured in 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels, with a few more months in foudre and oak vat to complete 15 months, which seem to have given a sleeker and more polished wine with a gentler mouthfeel. 40,500 bottles and 525 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2022. - Luis Gutiérrez

The 2020 Finca Villacreces combines 96% Tempranillo, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot. Aromatically intense, it offers notes of blackberry, cassis and a balsamic undercurrent. The palate is juicy, with moderately firm tannins and a subtle hint of red fruit on the finish. Classic Ribera palate with a touch of metallic acidity on the back end. Joaquin Hidalgo24th June 2025
