Ermitage Blanc Le Méal Chapoutier 2012 is a distinguished Roussanne white wine from the renowned Hermitage appellation in the northern Rhône Valley. The vines are planted on the steep, granite slopes of Le Méal, known for its exceptional terroir that yields wines with depth and precision. M Chapoutier has been a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture in this region since the late 20th century, enhancing the expression of each vineyard. This vintage displays a complex character, revealing layers of citrus, white flowers and mineral notes. The wine is structured, showcasing potential for further development over the coming decade.

Light gold. Poached pear, peach pit, honey and blond tobacco on the intensely perfumed, mineral-driven nose. Pliant, deeply concentrated pit fruit and melon flavors are complemented by succulent herbs and orange pith, with a stony element adding back-end cut. The mineral note reminds me a lot of Chablis, as strange as that may sound for an all-Marsanne wine. Suavely melds weight and vivacity, finishing with excellent clarity and length and a clinging note of candied orange. Josh Raynolds1st February 2015

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
