Founded in 1946, Domaine Guigal is one of the most revered and unwaveringly consistent estates in the Rhône Valley and is often seen as a benchmark for quality Côte-Rôtie. The top three wines from Guigal are known affectionately in some circles as the La La’s, which is short for La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque. La Mouline is produced from Syrah and Viognier sourced from a 1-hectare plot of vines on the Côte Blonde, some of which are close to 100 years of age. The 1978 is one of the legendary releases of this wine and has twice received a perfect 100-point score from wine critic, Robert Parker Jr.

Showing modest bricking on the rim at 51-years of age, the cornucopia of aromas here is entrancing. With scents of mulberry, singed leather, camphor, dried fig, hints of game and fireside hearth, the 1978 La Mouline is mercurial in the glass, shape shifting with every moment. It possesses stunning delineation. The palate does not disappoint. This is perfectly balanced with melted tannins, velvety in texture with slightly gamey red fruit, truffle, wild mint, cloves and thyme. With its cashmere mouthfeel, it appears to have borrowed the texture from a top-class Romanée-Saint-Vivant! It's an almost faultless display, gaining harmony over 20-30 minutes, just a hint of VA gives the finish a gentle poke. This is a Côte-Rôtie with soul to spare, a Côte-Rôtie to take you to la la land. Neal Martin11th October 2022
