Jean-Luc Colombo is one of the most celebrated producers in the Rhône Valley. Now with daughter Laure at the helm, the winery continues to go from strength to strength, crafting wines of precision, finesse and undeniable regional typicity. Cornas Le Vallon de l’Aigle (‘The Valley of the Eagle’) is made from a single parcel of old Syrah vines and is only produced in exceptional vintages. The 2013 is a wonderfully perfumed wine with marvellous amplitude and incredibly sumptuous texture. Initial waves of liquidised rock and dried flowers, cedes to an intense core of rich black fruits, followed by subtle spice inflections. A gorgeous wine to be savoured over the next decade.

Vinous
(aged in 50% new French oak barriques): Dark purple. Powerful smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of dark berries, cherry liqueur and vanilla, along with a suggestion of olive in the background. Smooth, broad and sweet on the palate, offering concentrated blackberry and violet pastille flavors and a jolt of smoky minerality on the back half. Shows quite impressive energy and focus for its heft. Finishes velvety and extremely long, displaying excellent focus, harmonious tannins and lingering spiciness. Josh Raynolds1st March 2016
