Contino Graciano 2020 is a varietal Graciano red wine produced by Bodega Contino in Rioja. This vintage exhibits a deep purple hue and presents intense aromas of wild red fruit along with subtle floral hints. On the palate, it showcases a firm structure complemented by lively acidity. Contino`s vineyard, a former royal estate, benefits from diverse soils and a Mediterranean climate, which contribute to the wine`s concentrated yet well-defined character. Grapes are hand-harvested, ensuring quality throughout the production process.

I tasted two vintages of some wines, including the varietal Graciano. The 2020 Graciano was produced with grapes that were picked on September 22 with moderate ripeness, delivering a wine with 13.58% alcohol, a low pH (3.25) and notable acidity (6.8) but much lower than the 2021 that I tasted next to it. I find it to be quite different from the 2021 I tasted next to it; this feels more rustic and less perfumed, with a note of tar, licorice and ink. The palate shows some earthiness and a dry finish. It matured in French oak barrels for two years. 5,236 bottles were filled in June 2023.

CVNE

A Spanish Classic

CVNE is a family-run company, founded in March 1879 in Haro, Rioja by Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa. The Real de Asúa brothers’ aim was to capitalise on the flourishing new trade in wine and over 140 years later CVNE is still under the stewardship of the direct descendants of the founding family, now in its fifth generation.

Wines produced under the CVNE label include "Cune" a label inspired by an early mis-spelling of the CVNE name; "Monopole", a superb white Rioja; "Corona", a rare sweet white produced using grapes affected by noble rot; "Real de Asúa", a sister wine to the famous Imperial range; "Vina Real", premium red and white Rioja produced from grapes sourced in the Alavesa sub-region; "Pagos de Viña Real", CVNE's top tier Rioja first released in 2001; and "Contino", a Rioja produced using grapes sourced exclusively from a 62 hectare estate near Laserna.
