Chapel Down Kit’s Coty Chardonnay 2022 is a medium-bodied, single-vineyard white wine produced at the Chapel Down estate in Tenterden, Kent. Chapel Down is one of the UK`s leading producers of both sparkling and still wines, with winemaking overseen by industry veteran, Owen Elias. Produced from handpicked Chardonnay fruit grown on the chalky soils of Kit`s Coty vineyard on the North Downs of Kent, this wine is aged in French oak for nine months. A complex, textured wine with notes of white peach, apple and apricot, followed by roasted hazelnuts and buttery notes.

While the Kit`s Coty site on North Kent chalk has turned out some solid still wines, the 2022 Kit`s Coty Chardonnay is appearing a little awkward; on the one hand, this is rather narrow and squeezed, despite some generous aromatics of roasted pear, toasted almond and pineapple, with a pronounced leesy weight seeming to sit slightly uncomfortably with the build of the wine. The extraction is a felt a little heavily here, too. Although 2022 was certainly warm and sunny, the extreme dryness did occasionally present unusual balances at harvest, which is perhaps a factor at play here. - Tom Hewson

Modest nose, much less dramatic than the Whitewolfe Chardonnays. Sweet palate entry and nice freshness of fruit with gentle texture but a little mild. Correct rather than thrilling.
