The Capensis Fijnbosch Chardonnay seeks to showcase the pinnacle of purity from a singular site within the Stellenbosch District, and is only produced by winemaker Graham Weerts during exceptional vintages. Fruit for this wine is sourced exclusively from the “Flowers” block on the estate Fijnbosch vineyard. Planted at 1,968 feet, this block is home to the highest planted vines in the Stellenbosch District.

The 2016 Fijnbosch Chardonnay has a well-defined nose, displaying more extract than the Silene or the regular cuvée, and more undergrowth scents mixed with fern and broom. The palate is well balanced, taut and fresh with a fine bead of acidity. Touches of white pepper furnish the finish, which shows just a touch of heaviness. Otherwise, this is perfectly fine.

2016 was a challenging vintage, but the 2016 Fijnbosch Chardonnay shows some finesse that still is better than the typical range; however, the challenging vintage robs some potential from the enjoyment. Medium to full-bodied, the expression begins to unfold on the palate with fresh apple slices, oak spices and lemon drop, but the mid-palate begins to move a little flat. The wine ends with a robust finish with an oaky presence of popcorn and brown baking spices. Only 57 cases were made in this challenging vintage. - Anthony Mueller
