Founded in the 19th century, Tenuta Il Poggione is a historic estate in Montalcino, particularly known for its rich and dense Brunello wines. The estate covers an impressive area of 530 hectares, with 140 hectares planted to vines. This particular release is made only in exceptional years from fruit sourced exclusively from the ‘I Paganelli’ vineyard, planted in 1964. The 2010 growing season was characterized by good weather conditions, allowing for optimal ripening of the Sangiovese grapes. The resulting wines from this vintage are known for their structure and age-worthiness.

What a treat! The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli stands out for the extreme purity of its fruit and the profound depth it shows across all the senses. This starts with the wine`s appearance, which is bright, saturated, ruby-colored and luminous all at the same time. The aromas emerge from the glass with vertical intensity, imparting fresh notes of wild berry, licorice, balsam herb and dried rose hip. This highly successful vintage stands apart for the power and clarity of fruit it puts so generously on display. If you are lucky enough to own a bottle, I`d store it at the back of your cellar for many more years to come. - Monica Larner

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is magnificent. Huge swaths of tannin coat the palate as the 2010 shows off its power, breadth and overall intensity. Plum, black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, smoke, licorice and cloves are some of the many notes that hit the palate. The Riserva is dark, powerful and brooding. It will require at least a handful of years before it becomes approachable. These old vines, planted in 1964, confer weight, power and gravitas, all qualitites that come through loud and clear on the huge, explosive finish.Antonio Galloni1st February 2016

Il Poggione

An Historic Tuscan Estate

Il Poggione’s stellar reputation for producing fine, long-aged Brunellos is down to the skilled and highly experienced winemakers who have managed the winery cellars: Pierluigi Talenti from 1958 until his death in 1999, ably followed by Fabrizio Bindocci (also the president of the wine consortium Brunello di Montalcino DOCG) and, from 2005, Fabrizio’s son Alessandro.

In the cellar, traditional winemaking prevails, with the use of a submerged cap (the grape solids which rise to the surface of the vats during fermentation) and frequent pumpovers preferred to maximise extraction and ageing conducted in large French oak casks. The standard Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is matured in cask for three years before a further period of bottle age before release. The estate’s Riserva bottling, which is only made in exceptionally good vintages, spends an additional year in cask.
