AA Badenhorst Sout van die Aarde Palomino 2022 is a medium-bodied, single-vineyard white wine from the Swartland region of South Africa. This under-the-radar Palomino from Adi Badenhorst uses fruit from a vineyard planted in the 1940s, which also provides fruit for Eben Sadie’s Skerpioen cuvée. "Whole bunch pressed before ageing in older 500-litre barrels, this is a savoury, earthy, salty number with sourdough bread and umami flavours, a nip of skin tannins and a sea breezy finish." Tim Atkin MW, 2023

- The 2022 Palomino Sout Vandie Aarde is aged in a single 1200-liter foudre a couple of kilometers from the ocean. The saline nose has a hint of marmalade and melted wax. The palate is well-balanced with a waxy texture, touches of hazelnut and litchee, and stem ginger driving along the finish. Lovely balance and length here.

Translates as ‘Salt of the Earth’. Grapes from the same Swartland Skerpioen vineyard as Eben Sadie buys from. Eben says vines date from the 1920s; Adi says 1970s.Such grip and excitement! Makes me look forward to the Vino de Pasto tasting that Ferran is setting up for us in Jerez. Bruised apples and really good acidity – for a Palomino! Suspect it’s not for long ageing.(JR)
